RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Officials have released more information after a deputy shot and killed a 76-year-old man during an arrest attempt on June 17.
John Krga was shot and killed by an Oneida County deputy after he fired a weapon during an arrest attempt on charges of sexually assaulting a child, according to a press release.
Deputies Alyssa Knabenbauer and Justin Orth went to 5620 Lumen Lake Drive on June 17 to arrest Krga for first-degree sexual assault of a child and repeated acts of sexual assault to the same child, according the release from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. During the arrest around 10 a.m., Krga pulled out a firearm and fired it, according to law enforcement.
Orth fired back, striking Krga. Knabenbauer did not discharge her weapon, according to the release. Krga was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations is now leading the investigation, as required by state law for officer-involved critical incidents.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office thanked multiple agencies for their assistance, including the Minocqua Police Department, the Woodruff Police Department, the Oneida County Ambulance Service, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Marathon County Bomb Squad, the Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Wisconsin Professional Police Association.
