MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Former Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is officially saying goodbye to Milwaukee.
In a two-minute-long video posted on X on Monday afternoon, Antetokounmpo looked back on his 13-year career with the Bucks, saying, “I hope I was able to represent them (Bucks fans) the best that I could, and I was just like them. I showed up to work, did everything I was willing to do, all the dirty work, just like them. I hope that bringing a trophy to the city meant something to them because it meant so much to me.”
“I want you to hear it from my mouth: the City of Milwaukee will always be in my heart…this is my home…this is a place I had my kids…my mom is here…my father is here…my brothers played here…it made me the man that I am today, and that will never change. No matter where I am, Milwaukee will always be my city, my team, my family,” he continued.
According to NBA insider Jake Weinbach, the Bucks front office has confirmed that the franchise will retire the number 34, but no date has formally been set for when the event will take place.
The Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat’s blockbuster trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, and multiple draft picks becomes official today. The players and teams involved can now discuss the deal.
In response to the trade now being official, Bucks GM Jon Horst posted a hopeful letter on X to Bucks fans, saying, “This decision is in the best interest of Bucks fans and Giannis. I understand the emotions this news brings, and I share them. I’m confident in our path forward, which provides a strong foundation for sustained success. As we begin the next chapter of Bucks basketball, we do so with optimism, purpose, and a clear vision to build on our standard of excellence while strengthening our competitive identity and winning culture under the leadership of our new head coach, Taylor Jenkins.”
