WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Now’s your chance to get a new snowmobile or dirt bike at a potential discount.
The US Department of Justice and the Treasury have announced that assets seized from Stanley Pophal will be sold to the highest bidder starting July 28th. The listing includes more than 600 items that were purchased with investor funds. The listing is expected to include hundreds of snowmobiles, dirt bikes, and go-karts.
“Restitution is a critical part of our justice system. Our responsibility is not only to hold criminals accountable, but to also do everything within the law to help victims recover what was stolen from them,” explained U.S. Attorney Chadwick Elgersma. “The forfeiture and sale of assets in this case are part of our efforts to make Pophal’s victims whole. The U.S. Department of Justice is committed to using every available tool to support victims, protect the public, and reaffirm that fraud has real consequences.”
Pophal pled guilty to federal wire fraud and money laundering charges in mid-June. He is scheduled for sentencing in September.
Investigators discovered that the 64-year-old took more than $14 million from 190 people as part of the scheme.
Apple Auctioneering Company will handle the sale. Details about the items will be listed online in the coming days. Those interested in bidding are encouraged to register in advance of the sale, which will be listed as ” U.S. Treasury (WI Motorsports).”
