MADISON, WI (WSAU) A lawyer representing the family of a man shot by police is calling for criminal charges against the officer who fired the fatal shot.
Ben Crump, who represents the family of Corey Ruiz said, “They not only tackled him, not only tased him, not only kicked him, but you saw they shot him three times in his head and other parts of his body,” Crump said.
Ruiz was killed Wednesday. Police responded to a report of a man trying to steal bicycles and break into parked cars. Police say Ruiz was armed with a knife and injured one officer. A taser failed to subdue him.
The officer who fired the shot has not been identified. All four officers who responded are on administrative leave. The shooting will be investigated by the State Department of Justice.
There is cellphone video of the shooting. Madison does not require officers to wear body-cameras. Local authorities say the video, which has been circulating widely online, does not show what happened from the officers’ perspective.
