I came across this while surfing You Tube yesterday. I had never seen it before. I've been huge fan of Stephen Stills work and have seen him in concert many times but never have heard him do this kind of relaxed, sober interview before. Some interesting stories as you might imagine. He was part of the Laurel Canyon scene in the late 60's and if you havent seen the latest documentary on that moment of time on the Epix channel, seek it out. He unfortunatley, like many of his 60's brethern, has hearing problems that has turned his bluesy voice to a croaky growl. His last recorded work was an album with long time friend Judy Collins (yes, Suite Judy Blue Eyes and Bluebird were about her) from a couple of years ago. It had its moments but you could tell, singing was becoming a struggle. But he will always have his place in music history. You can argue that Buffalo Springfield was one of the most underrated bands in rock history and of course his work with CSN and CSNY speaks for itself.
When he talks about his friendship with Hendrix…here is a track from Stills first solo record that I believe features one of the last Hendrix recording before he died.
A couple of birthdays today….Joe Piscopo turns 69 and Barry Manilow is 77. I know they have nothing in common outside of many people don't like them. I think they both had their moments. Piscopo did some good work in his time at SNL including the best Sinatra impression ever…
And Manilow was ignored or vilified by music snobs in the 70's for being syrupy sweet and unhip but he wrote pop songs…some were formulaic sure, but they had hooks and usually sounded good coming out of your radio. Tell the truth, you sang along and did the patented drum break for the big finish on most of those records. The one that I played on the radio on WIFC that I thought was a bit better than the rest was “It's a Miracle”. I know, not hip and certainly wouldn't want a steady diet of it…but it was a catchy, uptempo pop tune…and sometimes that's all you need to put a smile on your face.
