MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Besides the mayoral race won by political newcomer Bob McManus, there were also a number of other local races and a referendum on the ballot in Marshfield.
Marshfield voters gave a big ‘thumbs up’ to a non-binding resolution calling for the regulation of political campaign spending by large entities like corporations, unions, or super-PACs.
According to Ben Dorshorst who spearheaded the group ‘Marshfield to Amend,’ “The nature of this issue is about restoring the representative democracy that we have, that we feel is being corrupted by this unlimited flow of money. And so we thought it was really important that every citizen have the chance to weigh-in on it.”
There was only one contested aldermanic seat on Marshfield’s Common Council in District 7 where incumbent Jason Zaleski outpaced challenger David Peterson by a three to one margin.
Steve MacSwain ran unopposed in District 5 to fill the seat being vacated by long-serving alderman Ed Wagner who is retiring.
Five candidates were competing for three seats on Marshfield’s Board of Education. First-time candidate Karen Shulman was the top vote-getter with 3,009 votes, followed by incumbent Frances Bohon, and the third spot on the board went to another newcomer, S.A.M. Steiner.
