NEILLSVILLE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) The mayor of Neillsville is stepping down over what he describes as a “misunderstanding” over where he lives.
Steve Mabie turned in his letter of resignation Wednesday.
Mabie lives in a cabin outside the city, but thought he could still vote and hold office in the city because he owns a home in Neillsville. State statute says an office holder must be a resident of the voting district.
In an interview with WEAU-TV, Mabie said he was “backed into a corner and really under duress, I resigned.” He added that he is unwilling to move from his cabin, saying “I just will not let someone change my lifestyle as a result of what they think I should do.”
The council will officially accept Mabie’s resignation at their next meeting on August 28. The President of the City Council, Charles Glassbrenner, will serve as acting mayor.
Mabie had been mayor for 7 years.
