EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (WSAU) — The Packers got their first road win of the season in an overtime victory against the New York Jets.
Despite trailing through three quarters, the Green Bay Packers were able to force overtime against the New York Jets and win 44-38. Green Bay now improves to 6-8-1 on the season as the Jets fell to 4-11.
Aaron Rodgers finished the game completing 37 of 55 passes for 442 yards. He had two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns.
On offense, rookie wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown led the way, with five receptions for 94 yards. Receiver Davanta Adams had the most receptions for the Packers with 11, racking up 71 yards and a touchdown in overtime. Rookie receiver Jake Kumerow had his first NFL touchdown today as he had three catches for 68 yards.
The Packers were shutout in the first quarter, as the Jets were able to score on their second drive of the game. Green Bay finished the first with the ball, but at the beginning of the second, a sack to Rodgers by Henry Anderson forced a punt.
The Jets then went up 14-0 on their next drive on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson. The Packers would score on their next drive as Jake Kumerow made a deep catch down the sideline cutting two defenders for his first NFL touchdown.
The Jets then quickly went back up by two touchdowns on the next play as kick returner Andre Roberts ran the kickoff back for 99 yards. Green Bay was able to get back within a touchdown on their next possession. After a 14 yard pass to St. Brown, Jets defensive end Leonard Williams was ejected and received a personal foul for throwing a punch at Bulaga. That put the Packers on the Jets 7 yard line and Williams ran it in to put Green Bay within a touchdown with 1:33 left in the half.
On the Packers next series, Jamaal Williams ran for 15 yards on the first play to get across midfield. Rodgers was then sacked on the next play. A defensive penalty on the next play moved Green Bay to the Jets 35. The Packers were unable to get in the end zone and brought out Mason Crosby, who kicked a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half to put the score at 21-17.
The first drive of the second half led to a 29-yard field goal from Crosby. That put the Packers within one of the Jets. But the Jets scored on a lengthy drive with a touchdown by Herndon making it 28-20 with 4:21 left in the third. Moore fumbled the kickoff after and the Jets recovered at Green Bay’s 18. They went up another touchdown on a 28 yard run from McGuire. The third quarter ended with a Packers punt.
The Packers first drive of the 4th quarter led to a 38-yard field goal from Crosby after Rodgers was unable to connect with Valdes-Scantling. Green Bay’s next drive resulted in a touchdown from Rodgers, who ran it in on the 1, making the score 35-30 with 6:32 left in the game.
The Jets were short on their next drive and attempted a successful fake punt to get the ball back at their 35. After the fake punt, the Jets weren’t able to get further than midfield before needing to punt it away. Green Bay took over on their 17 with 3:12 left. After the two minute warning, Rodgers was able to make a 23-yard scramble to the 1. The Packers were able to score a touchdown on a QB sneak on fourth and one.
When going for the two-point conversion, Jets defensive back Darryl Roberts intercepted Rodgers pass and returned it all the way to the other end zone. He did end up with a holding call, which put the ball at the 1. Rodgers was able to get the 2 point conversion on a read option and the Packers led 38-35 with a 1:12 left in the game.
Roberts returned the Jets kickoff for 51 yards to the Green Bay 38. The Jets were able to get to the Green Bay 25, but couldn’t get any closer after three incomplete passes. New York kicker Meyers hit a 33 yarder to tie the game with 17 seconds left, sending it into overtime.
In overtime, the Packers won the coin toss and took the ball. From Green Bay’s 25, the Packers had two runs for a first down. Facing a third and ten, Rodgers was interfered with by CB Trumain Johnson to put Green Bay at the New York 27.
Offsetting penalties a couple plays later put the Packers at second and one on the New York 18. After a first down by Williams to the 18, a pass interference call on the Jets put the Packers at first and goal on the 6.
Rodgers completed a rollout touchdown run that was negated by a holding penalty on Bulaga, putting Green Bay at the 16. Rodgers was able to find Adams over the middle for a touchdown to end the game with a score of 44-38.
The Packers last game of the season will be at home against the Detroit Lions next Sunday. Kickoff is set for 12 pm.
