WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of shooting a Wisconsin Rapids man who was married to his ex-wife may have committed the crime in front of the victim’s children, according to court documents obtained by Newsline 9.
Gary Bohman, who was formally charged with murder in the case on Thursday, could be seen picking up Christopher Race’s 11-month-old son and carrying him out of the Higher Grounds Bakery following the incident. That’s according to the criminal complaint and surveillance footage from the bakery and coffee shop.
Bohman then called 911 from a nearby restaurant to report the crime, saying he had gone into the store for coffee but instead found the victim lying on the floor. Restaurant employees placed Bohman and the child in the building shortly after the shooting.
The complaint states police also responded to an open-line 911 call from the store, which came from Race’s 7-year-old son. The boy told police he had dialed for help but wasn’t sure if the call had gone through. The older son also told officers at the scene that his dad had been shot while working behind the counter.
According to online court records Bohman had previously been married to Race’s current wife. Court documents say the couple filed for divorce in 2012 due to irreconcilable differences. Race then married Jacalyn Bohman in February of 2015.
No motive for the shooting has been given.
