SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Before President Donald Trump takes the stage at the Central Wisconsin Airport on Wednesday, he’ll spend some time with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker behind the scenes.
Speaking in Schofield at CTECH Manufacturing, where the incumbent Republican received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, Walker said he will use that time to thank Trump for the several ways he’s helped out the state in recent months.
“[We’re going to thank him] for his help on the Canadian trade deal to help dairy farmers,” said Walker. “A year and a half ago I told the President we needed help, specific to Canada when it came to our dairy farmers. He held out on his trade deal to the very end to make sure dairy farmers in Wisconsin got a bit of a level playing field. That’s good news, at a time when we definitely need good news.”
The Governor also plans to thank Trump for expediting federal aid to areas of Southern Wisconsin hit hard by recent flooding events and for allowing the state a waiver to help put the Health Care stability plan into action. “All of those things are important.”
Walker says the recent attention being paid to Wisconsin races by national political figures such as Vice President Mike Pence, former Democratic Presidental Candidate Bernie Sanders, and former President Barack Obama shows that Democrats are trying to flip the state in several key races.
“They’re (Democrats) targeting us as part of a nationally coordinated campaign,” said Walker. He blames special interest groups for the recent barrage of attack ads targeting Walker’s stance on insurance coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, which he calls a lie. “The President and Vice President coming in are a sign that they want to help us counter that.”
Walker adds that a second visit by VP Pence could be in the works over the next two weeks. He also anticipates getting some stage time with the President during the rally at the Endeavor Air Hangar.
Chir of the Republican Party Ronna McDaniel told WSAU Wisconsin Morning News host Ben Armstrong that she feels Trump’s strategic tour is helping to boost his standing in areas where Republicans are already doing well. “Everyone’s recognizing the President’s approval is at a record high and Americans want to see immigration reform”
McDaniel says she’s been touring the country in several key states and says she feels good about the GOP’s chances of holding on to both the House and Senate. Although, she does think that Democrats will manage to flip a few seats in the House. “People are recognizing what’s at stake, is it resolve or is it resistance?”
Wednesday’s rally is scheduled to begin at 6:30. Those with tickets are encouraged to be at CWA at 3:30.
