WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A DC Everest middle school teacher will go to trial on charges of raping a teenage girl in his Mosinee home.
Peter Schmidt made an appearance in Marathon County Court on Tuesday, facing felony charges of 1st Degree Child Sexual Assault, Child Enticement, Use of a Computer to Facilitate a Sex Crime, and False Imprisonment.
Schmidt waived his right to a preliminary hearing and a judge determined there was enough evidence to send the case to trial.
According to Police Schmit befriended the victim on various social media platforms like SnapChat and Whisper in the summer of 2016. He arranged to meet the girl at his home in August of that year, and after showing her around he is accused of forcibly kissing her and raping her. He then told her not to tell anyone about the incident. In the weeks that followed, the girl says he continued to contact her until she blocked him on all social media.
Police also found 45 grams of marijuana after a search of Schmidt’s house.
A trial date was not immediately set. Schmidt will return to court on September 11th for an arraignment. He has not entered a plea on the charges.
Officials with the DC Everest school district placed Schmit on leave after the accusations against Schmidt surfaced. He does not have access to any district facilities. Officials have also emphasized that the victim in the case was not an Everest student.
Schmidt has been with the district for over 30 years.
