WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — An event geared towards helping kids learn about science in a fun way is being held this weekend at Northcentral Technical College.
This Friday and Saturday Northcentral Technical College is hosting the Central Wisconsin Science and Engineering Festival with Michigan Technological University’s Mind Trekkers team. While Saturday is open to the public Friday is for nearly 4,000 middle schoolers from all over central Wisconsin to enjoy the fun side of science. Kelsi Seubert the marketing and public relations coordinator at NTC explains how the day works for the middle school students. “We open the gates and let all of the students explore and get their hands dirty and really participate in the activities that they want to participate in. Knowing that we organized the kids by school so that they are with the correct people.”
The festival includes several fun education activities like skewering a balloon without popping it and playing a piano with banana keys. Seubert explains the Walking on Water station, one that’s a favorite for her kids. “Which is essentially like a big oobleck pool that’s on the ground where it’s like a cornstarch and water mixture. Where if you put a lot of force and pressure on it it is a solid but if you don’t put a lot of force on it, it’s a liquid. So if you run across it really quick it’s like your essentially walking on water. And if you stand in the middle of it you sink just like you would in water.”
This may seem like an event only for kids, but it can also be for anyone. While it is family friendly, Seubert recommends coming out if you have an interest in STEM. “It’s so great. There’s something for everyone. If you are just remotely interested in science experiments, technology, engineering, math, come on in and check it out.”
The Science and Engineering Festival is open to the public on Saturday, September 22nd from 10 AM to 3 PM at NTC’s Wausau campus.
