STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — One of Portage County’s ten most wanted criminals is behind bars this evening.
Jeremiah Button, who has been on the run since 2016, was taken into custody at around 11:30 AM on Friday along Poplar Rd near the Ice Age Trail in the Town of Ringle.
The 44-year-old has been wanted on charges of first-degree sexual assault of a child and possession of child pornography.
Authorities in Portage County said a tip from Marathon County led them to Button’s location. He is currently being held in the Portage County jail.
Officials found Button in a man-made structure along the trail that was described as “self-sustainable.”
Portage County District Attorney Louis Molepske said initial court proceedings for Button will be scheduled early next week.
During a news conference Friday afternoon sheiff Mike Lucas said the most important thing is that Button is off the streets and can be held accountable for his actions.
