WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A man who fled the scene of a single-vehicle crash in October will only get probation time.
Aaron Trotzer, 44, of Rothschild was sentenced to 3 years on probation Wednesday for his 6th OWI. Part of Trotzer’s sentence includes being successful in the Marathon County OWI treatment court. He will also spend 9 months in jail for OWI treatment court conditions.
If Trotzer doesn’t complete OWI court, he will spend 4 years in prison with 3 years of extended supervision. He has also been ordered to pay a $3,976 fine.
On October 10th police were called to report of a Volkswagen Bug crashing into a concrete barrier at the intersection of Weston Ave.and Birch St. When officers arrived at the crash they learned the driver, Trotzer, had abandoned the vehicle and was picked up by another driver.
The incident report says the vehicle was significantly damaged with a stoplight and village of Weston sign being struck in the crash. Officers observed in the car an open can of White Claw and an open bottle of vodka in the glove box.
Police were able to track down Trotzer through DOT records. When officers located him, Trotzer was being treated by emergency crews for crash-related injuries and was taken to a local hospital. When asked about the crash, Trotzer told police he consumed a bottle of vodka before driving.
Trotzer had past OWI convictions in 1998, 2004, 2008, and 2010. He was also convicted of operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration in June of 2015.
