WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A man faces up to 45 years in prison for illegally selling Kohl’s Cash online.
WAOW-TV is reporting that Robert Gordon of Wausau has been federally charged for illegally obtaining and selling Kohl’s Cash on social media.
Gordon and his wife ran the Twitter account OfficialJigLord, advertising an ability to “specialize in steals, deals, and jigs.” On that account, Gordon sold Kohl’s Cash he obtained by hacking the Kohl’s database that contained Kohl’s Cash numbers.
He would then sell them on the Twitter account. Once users bought in, they would brag about it on Twitter. One tweet read, “Shoutout to @OfficialJigLord for the hookup!”, showing off expensive Vera Wang sheets in a picture. A receipt was also included in the picture that showed the purchase was made with a series of different Kohl’s Cash numbers.
Investigators were able to find Gordon after receiving complaints and following a digital trail. That trail led to Gordon and his wife’s IP address.
According to court documents, Gordon and his wife made almost $93,000 in a four months period from selling the numbers. Gordon and his wife are both out of jail but scheduled to return to court for preliminary hearings on June 20.
In a statement, a Kohl’s spokesperson said the company was working with investigators and encouraged customers to avoid using the same username and passwords across multiple sites and to change passwords frequently.
Gordon faces 45 years in prison and a $750,000 fine if convicted.
