WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A new non-profit in Wausau has opened their first building.
Adaptive Communities Inc held a ribbon cutting Wednesday afternoon for their first building in Wausau. The ribbon cutting was attended by the Wausau Chamber of Commerce and members of Adaptive Communities with their families.
Director Katie Normand said the location is a great fit for the non-profit as it sits on the Wausau bus line.
“Our biggest thing was being on the bus line. Most of our members do use city transportation. So that was one of our biggest things. So we were very lucky to find this location with these big open windows for lots of sunlight. It’s very easy to access so it’s a really nice spot for us to start off in.” The non-profit helps adults with special need who are middle to higher functioning learn independent living skills. Normand explains some of the skills members learn at Adaptive Communities.
“We work on independent living skills, safe socialization. We establish friendships. Our biggest thing is enhancing the quality of life and making people feel good. Cleaning, cooking, just becoming independent as much as we all can be.”
Normand says the non-profit is already looking for another building as they are quickly outgrowing their current space.
“We are slowly outgrowing ours, which is a wonderful problem to have. We hope to engage more businesses with our members and it’s a great way for our members also to experience Wausau. I think at the end of the day our biggest goal is just to make Wausau feel comfortable and safe for them.”
There are plans to expand the non-profit outside of Wausau but Normand couldn’t speak to any details. Adaptive Communities Inc. can be found at 518 South 17th Avenue in Wausau.
