WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A former candidate for Congress has announced they won’t run in a special election.
Margaret Engerbretson was the Democratic nominee in 2018 for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. She announced on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that she is not running for the seat again in the special election following Sean Duffy’s resignation in September.
In her tweet, Engerbretson says, “If running for Congress were only a matter of heart, drive, and preparedness to serve our district in Congress at this historic pivot point – when democracy is under attack globally – I would run in the special election for Wisconsin’s 7th CD in an instant.
“Regrettably, the timing is not good for me personally this go-around and I’ve decided it’s best for me to sit this one out – no matter how much it pains me to do so. The people I would be honored to serve deserve the best, and right now I cannot give a campaign my 100%. I want to sincerely thank everyone who encouraged me to run again.”
So far no Democratic candidate has come forward to run for the vacated 7th Congressional seat. State Senator Tom Tiffany, Hudson Veteran Jason Church, and Edgar native Michael Opela have all announced runs in a Republican primary.
The primary is currently scheduled for December 30th. However, Governor Tony Evers is being pressured by some in Madison to shift that date because it falls on the 8th and final day of Hanukkah.
