STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Hundreds of volunteers will come together on Friday and Saturday to help pack meals for hungry kids across the world.
The UW-Stevens Point student Health Care Organization is hosting a MobilePack event at the Stevens Point Airport for the Christian-based non-profit Feed My Starving Children. The goal of the event is to pack over 124,000 nutritious meals for children worldwide.
Event organizer and senior lecturer at UWSP Michelle Shulfer explains how the event will go for the participants on Friday and Saturday. “They are actually packing the meals. So the rice, the soy, the dried vegetables, and minerals come in bulk.
“And we need to measure the ingredients. We need to pack them in bags, seal them, and then box them up on palettes so that they can get shipped around the world.”
This is the second year of the UWSP student organization hosting a mobile pack event with Feed My Starving Children. At last year’s event, the 500 community and student volunteers packed over 116,000 meals.
This year the goal is to pack over 124,000 meals that cost only 24 cents for children around the world. And while spots at the event this weekend are full, Shulfer explains that community members can still help by donating to the fundraising efforts.
“We need to raise $26,000. … They would donate by going to our website. Which would be www.give.fmse.org/uwsp. And that’s specific for our event. And they can make a donation online.”
The MobilePack event at the airport will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday and run through Saturday afternoon. While spots for this specific MobilePack event are full, Schulfer does mention that there will be an event in Marshfield in the spring.
