RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU) — A Northwoods man will spend 25 years behind bars for sexually assaulting a child.
Brandon Darnick of Minocqua was sentenced for a charge of 1st-degree sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 Thursday morning. Darnick was sentenced to 25 years of initial confinement in state prison with 15 years of extended supervision to follow.
Darnick was accused of sexually assaulting a 2-year-old boy in 2013. The case itself stems from a sexual assault kit that was left untested for over 4 years. The sexual assault kit was tested in 2018 as part of the Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), leading to the charge against Darnick.
Attorney General Josh Kaul says of the sentencing, “This case shows, once again, how important the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative is and how important it is that we continue working to strengthen Wisconsin’s response to sexual assault. Thank you to the many people whose work led to justice.”
