STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Work on a new Welcome Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has begun in partnership with the UWSP Foundation.
The former Newman Center at the corner of Reserve Street and Fourth Avenue on campus was acquired by the UWSP Foundation to be remodeled into the new Welcome Center. The building will be used by the Admissions and Recruitment Office.
Director of Admissions and Recruitment Marc Young, says the building will serve several purposes. “We also wanted to make sure that the space was going to be utilized not only for prospective students. But our friends and our family of the University. So our foundation board, and our donors, and alumni. That can be a space where they can feel proud to be apart of.”
University Facility Services staff created initial floorplans, with interior design input from three Interior Architecture student interns. Young says the interns were a big part of the conception of the project. “Having students a part of the project is something that really gets to our mission and our values.
“Preparing students to take on real-life experiences. And so many of the renovations that happen on our campus are done with a student perspective in mind. We also want to know from our student interns, what it is that will help us connect with the up and coming generation.”
The design of the building was inspired by the theme “Cutting Edge, Sophisticated, Inviting, Energetic”. A number of technology features will also assist Admissions employees.
The reception area includes an interactive screen, and five meeting rooms with communication connectivity will accommodate visitors from a family to a large tour group.
A grand opening is planned for the new Welcome Center on October 17th. The event will be held in conjunction with the campus Homecoming Weekend.
