WESTON, WI (WSAU) — The Village of Weston could be the next area municipality to issue a non-binding resolution opposing the deportation of Hmong residents to Laos.
Trustees Yee Leng Xiong and Nathan Fiene issued a statement last week saying “individuals at risk of being deported are individuals who made mistakes when they were in their teens and early 20’s,” adding that they have served their sentences and become contributing members of the community.
Fiene added that they have bought their place in America by “blood and loyalty,”
The City of Wausau passed a similar resolution two weeks ago, brought forward by Alder Mary Thao. Other areas of Wisconsin that have issued similar resolutions include Appleton, Madison, and Eau Claire. Xiong also serves on the Marathon County Board and is working to bring a resolution to that body as well.
The matter will be discussed during this evening’s regularly scheduled village board meeting, set to begin at 6 PM at the Municipal Center.
