PHOENIX, AZ (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Green Bay Packers’ receiver Jordy Nelson had hip surgery sometime after appearing in his first Pro Bowl in late January. Coach Mike McCarthy was asked about it yesterday at an N-F-C coaches’ media breakfast at the league owners’ meetings in Phoenix.
A reporter asked why Nelson was wearing crutches when he recently went to a Milwaukee Bucks’ game. McCarthy said Nelson was having hip problems at the Pro Bowl game — and a decision was made to do clean-up surgery at that spot. The coach said it’s nothing serious, but Nelson should really speak for himself on the matter.
McCarthy believes his star wide-out will need 6-to-8 weeks to heal, but he’s not sure. The Packers won’t start doing on-field football preparations until May, so it appears that Nelson will have time to heal by then.
Players with off-season operations are often limited in their organized team activities and mini-camps, to make sure they’re healthy when training camp rolls around in late July. Nelson had a knee operation in 2013 for a long-recurring problem — and he’s been healthy since then.
