WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — Governor Scott Walker is back in Wausau Tuesday for another bill signing ceremony, for an initiative that can save lives.
Assembly Bill 545 was authored and introduced by Representative John Spiros and Senator Jerry Petrowski, and will require Wisconsin schools to instruct cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and cardio cerebral resuscitation (CCR) as part of the health education class curriculum.
The bill has gained support from the American Heart Association, which has been raising money to help equip schools with training materials and mannequins. Wausau West High School was also a participant with the Wausau Fire Department in their recent CPR Challenge with the Stevens Point Fire Department, to teach more people how to perform CPR.
Three students from central Wisconsin are credited with saving a man’s life by knowing CPR. 50-year-old Dan Christianson of Schofield had rode his bicycle past Hunter Devine, Ethan Kariger and Jakob Brogli at Rothschild’s Gaska Park when Christianson crashed and began to have a heart attack. The three teens began CPR and contacted 911.
Governor Walker will be at Wausau West High School’s auditorium to sign the measure into law at 1:35 p.m.
