I visted my son Wade in Charlotte for the last few days and left my phone in his car when he dropped us at the airport on Tuesday…so this is day 2 of being without my smart phone. And it's quietly liberating. I know I'm missing stuff that usually I would see instantly when checking my phone every 10 minutes. But it's been a very mellow couple of days not having to see the latest Trump stupidity on Twitter, thoughts and prayers from the asshats after the latest mass shooting or watch the trolls destroy the Packers before a meaningful snap has even happened. Getting information later than other people always seemed to be a negative, but the trade off for a little peace of mind is acceptable. I watched in the airport as almost every person was immersed in their screen ignoring all that went on around them. That would have been me too…except my phone was miles away. Try it if you dare. Put your phone in another room for a few hours to start. Read a book, listen to some music, watch a movie and go for a walk…without your phone there to distract you every few minutes. Yeah, you may go through the shakes for awhile, but you will soon realize that the information that you deem so critical now, will wait. Trust me…you can do it. And you may find it as liberating as I have.
While also in Charlotte we visited the Nascar Hall of Fame which is really well done…and I attended a heavy metal concert at the cities beautiful outdoor amphitheater. They have a district of the city called the Music Factory which includes the concert venue and numerous clubs, bars , breweries and restaurants all featuring live music. It's pretty cool.
I'm not a metalhead but the concert was strangely entertaining. It featured Bad Wolves (you may recognize them from their cover of Zombie), Asking Alexandria and Papa Roach. The first two were ok but Papa Roach surprised me. The sound and lights were really good and the band was tight as you might expect from an outfit that's been together as long as they have.
And now for something completely different….
