MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The state Public Service Commission has extended the utility disconnection moratorium until September 1st.
The increasing number of COVID-19 cases was the driving factor behind the commission’s decision. It means Wisconsin utilities won’t be able to disconnect service when customers aren’t able to pay their bills.
The P-S-C says residents struggling with finances during the pandemic may be eligible for assistance from the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program. Rules of eligibility for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program can be found at http://homeenergyplus.wi.gov/ or by calling (866) HEATWIS.
Customers who cannot come to an agreement with their provider can call the PSC at (800) 225-7729 or file a complaint on the commission’s website.
The PSC plans to meet Aug. 20 to discuss if further changes to utility shut off moratorium are needed.
