MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) Brewers starting center-fielder Lorenzo Cain has opted out of the remainder of the 2020 baseball season.
ESPN reports that Cain, 34, informed the team of his decision on Saturday, as the Brewers had their last two games canceled because of COVID-19 positives among their opponent, the St. Louis Cardinals. The team says they support Cain’s decision.
Cain was hitting .333 over five games this year, and was coming off a gold-glove season in 2019.
Unless Cain is deemed a ‘high risk’ player, he won’t be paid for the remainder of the season — foregoing an estimated $6-million in pro-rated salary. Cain remains under contract to the Brewers for 2021 and 2022.
