WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A local non-profit and a radio station are teaming up to bring a day of fun to area kids.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Wausau Area is hosting local radio station WIFC to bring kids a day of fun and hands-on learning. The event is part of WIFC’s “Kamp Kallaway” series, which has been a virtual summer camp for kids every other week. Boys and Girls Club Communications Director Cassandra Ambrosius says the idea to host Kamp Kallaway came from WIFC.
“Dave had reached out to me, said that they were doing these Kamp Kallaway series throughout the summer. Thought it would be a really cool opportunity to connect with The Boys and Girls Club. And what better place to reach kids in our community than the club. Obviously, we have kids coming throughout the summer so we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to team up and offer some really cool activities for them to do.”
The day will consist of four different activity stations for kids to rotate through at the Boys and Girls Club building. Non-club members can also participate in the event by registering for the online portion. Ambrosius describes the day’s activities.
“They’re going to be building a solar-powered oven to bake smores. Creating an edible mosaic using cereal. They’re going to be making fruit kababs and their going to be practicing problem-solving with bubble making. So four really cool different activities in our computer lab, our art room, outside, and in our multipurpose room as well.”
Dave Kallaway of WIFC’s morning show Kallaway on the Rise said the station came up with the “Kamp Kallaway” idea earlier this summer to help give kids something to do at home during the pandemic. “We created Kamp Kallaway’s. We knew there were some kids who have experienced going to camp and how fun that is. And others who had just dreamed about it. So we thought, well the only way we can do it is online. Kids can’t go out and be in any place in particular so we thought, well why don’t we do it so that we’re in a Zoom room.”
Kamp Kallaway has been running for a little over a month to much success. Kallaway says the response from kids and their families have been extremely positive so far, with some kids becoming Kamp Kallaway regulars. He says it’s possible that Kamp Kallaway could continue past the summer of 2020 if the need arises next year.
The event at the Boys and Girls Club of the Wausau Area will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 7th. Boys and Girls Club members can attend the event at the building while non-members can register for the online Zoom option. Registration can be found here.
