WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A new task force dedicated to reviewing policing practices is coming to a Central Wisconsin city.
Wednesday evening the Wausau City Council unanimously voted to approve a policing task force. The task force was introduced by Mayor Katie Rosenberg in partnership with Wausau Police Chief Ben Bliven back in June to address questions surrounding policing in the community.
The task force will review police department policies, hiring, social needs, systemic racism, and other issues. Seven representatives were also unanimously appointed to the task force to work on those reviews and recommendations.
The representatives include a council member (District 1 Alder Pat Peckham), two Police and Fire Commission members (North Central Health Care CEO Michael Loy and Marathon Co. District Supervisor William Harris), and four community members (Sarah Schneck, John Robinson, Michael Klemp-North, and Kayley McColley).
The task force will work with the Wausau City Council, the
Wausau Police and Fire Commission, and the Wausau Police Department to craft recommendations regarding policing in the city. With representatives appointed, the task force can begin meeting as a city board.
