WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Neighbors told Wausau police that a woman went to a nightclub while leaving her 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter home alone.
Kassandra Meloy, 30, is charged with child neglect, possession of drug paraphernalia, and bail jumping.
A neighbor called police early Sunday morning saying a young boy was in danger of falling out of a window that had a broken screen. Police say there was evidence of alcohol and drug use in the apartment. While they were investigating, a friend of Meloy’s arrived to check on the children, saying that she left them alone for about four hours while she went to a club in Schofield.
The children were taken by Child Protective Services.
Meloy was charged last fall in a child abuse case involving her boyfriend. Police were investigating Meloy’s 11-year-old child who hadn’t been attending school. The child said he was staying at home to protect his siblings from being abuse. The boyfriend was on probation from a separate child abuse charge, as was not supposed to have unsupervised contact with children. The children were also placed in protective custody then but were since returned to their mother.
Meloy will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on August 18.
