STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) High schools are being given new options to delay their fall sports seasons until the spring of 2021.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association voted Friday to set up an alternate spring season for football and other fall sports. Under that plan the spring football season would start with two weeks of practice starting on March 8, followed by a 7-game schedule through May 3rd. Teams that don’t make the playoffs could schedule an additional game at the end of the season.
The proposal would shorten the winter sports seasons, with state tournaments for hockey, boys basketball, and girls basketball starting in early February.
Shifting fall sports to spring would also mean a substantial overlap between the high school football and baseball seasons. High school baseball practice would start April 12th, just past the midway point of the adjusted football season. Regular-season baseball games would conclude in late May and the baseball tournament would run through June.
Baseball, and all spring sports, were canceled at the end of last year because of the school shutdowns because of COVID-19.
The WIAA is asking schools to announce whether they will move their sports seasons to the spring by September 1st.
