WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — As voters continue to request absentee ballots in bunches ahead of the November election, the city of Wausau has given them a new option for returning them outside of the postal service.
Mayor Katie Rosenberg and Clerk Leslie Kremer have announced that an official absentee ballot dropbox has been installed outside City Hall to allow voters to return the ballots once they’ve been completed.
“It’s secure. It’s gorgeous. And it’s right outside City Hall ready to collect your most sacred tool for our democracy,” said Rosenberg.
All ballots returned to the dropbox by 8 PM on Election Day (November 3rd) will be counted.
Absentee ballot requests in Wisconsin have skyrocketed since the COVID-19 outbreak began in March. That includes for the spring Presidental Primary and the 7th Congressional District special election in May.
Additionally, there’s been concerns about the postal service’s ability to handle the massive amounts of mail that would be associated with an increase in absentee voting for the election. Some have been encouraging voters to allow for up to two weeks of delivery time to receive their ballot, and another two weeks to have it returned.
