WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — An item for consideration by the Wausau City Council is still uncertain.
Tuesday evening the Wausau City Council was agendized to consider a special event license for an AMP Live Events MTE Tour event at the grandstand in Marathon Park on Saturday, August 27th. The license was approved by the city’s Public Health and Safety Committee last Thursday during a special meeting.
But at the council meeting on Tuesday evening, the agenda item was pulled by Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg. No reason was given by Mayor Rosenberg at the meeting as to why the item was pulled from the agenda.
The future of the license is now uncertain without final approval from the city council. Event licenses are initially approved by the Public Health and Safety Committee but approval is left up to the city council. Events denied by the council are offered a 25% refund of their application fees according to the application for special events.
With no official approval or denial from the city council, it’s unclear if the event will be able to proceed as scheduled Saturday at Marathon Park. Organizers have been promoting the event online, and tickets are on sale. The capacity for the event will be limited to between 3,000-4,000 for each show. The grandstand and infield at Marathon Park have a capacity of 10,000 for regular events.
Outside of some livestock events, Marathon Park has sat quietly by this summer. The 2020 Wisconsin Valley Fair was called off due to COVID-19, and no other events or concerts were held in the grandstand area as health officials have discouraged most large gatherings to prevent the spread of the virus
