GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — One day after the Milwaukee Bucks and Brewers chose to boycott their scheduled games after the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, the Green Bay Packers have postponed today’s regularly scheduled practice.
The Packers were one of four teams that announced they would postpone workouts. The list also included the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington.
The Colts released a statement saying they would use the day to hold discussions aimed at making a lasting social impact. The Packers did not immediately say what their plan would be for the day.
The shooting and violence that followed have left an impact on the professional sports world which was just hitting its stride again after a four-month pause due to COVID-19. After the Bucks called off their game, the NBA announced all of Wednesday’s games would be rescheduled along with all scheduled WNBA games for the day. The players then reportedly held a meeting inside the Orlando Bubble to discuss how to move forward. Some teams including the Lakers and Clippers called for the remainder of the season to be canceled. But as of Thursday, no such action was taken.
The Brewers game against the Reds was one of three Major League Baseball games that were postponed in protest. Others included Seattle vs San Diego and San Francisco vs the LA Dodgers. Five of the six Major League Soccer matches scheduled for Wednesday were also postponed.
The only MLS sides to play were Nashville SC and Orlando City, which kicked off just as the NBA’s postponements were being announced.
The underlying message through all the cancelations has been a united front for change. Major League Baseball released a statement saying “we will be allies in the fight to end racism and injustice.”
