Sign for the 400 Block in Downtown Wausau
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A Black Lives Matter rally is planned for Wausau at 2pm Saturday. Organizers are planning to gather on the 400-block downtown for what they call a ‘Silent No More’ reaceful protest.
Organizer Desiree Lashua told WAOW-TV, “People are tired, I’m tired of seeing rest in peace, I’m tired of seeing unarmed black man, unarmed black woman, child being shot… its gotta stop.”
Lashua said she has worked with the Wausau Police Department to coordinate her plans for the protest.
Todd Baeten, Patrol Captain for Wausau Police Department said, “we certainly understand the need for people to be heard and to express themselves, we just want to create a safe environment for that to happen here in Wausau.”
Lashua says, “I really wanna just see the community come together to show that even the black people in our community we stand by you we stand with you we may not understand 100% but we stand with you.”
Event organizers are requesting that protestors wear a mask but if you don’t have one they will have extra.
Meanwhile a Black Lives Matter event and a Freedom Fighters counter-protest in Stevens Point have both been canceled for Saturday. Stevens Point police have since said there was a small rally on Saturday morning at Church Street and Centerpoint Drive. There was a large police presence, and the event was peaceful.
