WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The Humane Society of Marathon County temporarily closed this week after 18 dogs were surrendered in a single incident on Monday.
Per HSMC policy very few details about the surrender have been released. Officials did tell WAOW TV that the dogs came from the Bevent area and varied in age with some under a year old.
Officials say many of the dogs are not used to people or leashes. Staff at the Humane Society will now work to get them accustomed to their new situation and give them health checks before they hit the adoption floor.
Once they are considered adoptable officials say they will move to the adoption floor.
Officials say if you’d like to help you can consider donating dog food or supplies or adopting one of the dogs that are currently available to make room for when the pups are ready.
It’s unclear if the dogs were surrendered by their owner. HSMC does have a no questions asked surrender policy.
