MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Welcome to scheduling college athletics in the middle of a national pandemic.
The Wisconsin Badger women’s and men’s hockey and men’s basketball squads announced schedule changes on Monday ahead of early-week games due to COVID-19 related issues.
Men’s hockey has postponed their games against Michigan State. Those games, which were to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, are expected to be rescheduled when the second half of the Big Ten schedule is announced later this month.
The women’s hockey program called off two week’s worth of games today as well- a December 11th and 12th series against Minnesota-Duluth and a series against Ohio State on the 18th and 19th- due to a lack of players. Officials say because of COVID-19 positive tests, contact tracing, and injures the Badgers would not have enough players on the roster to safely play those games.
Meanwhile, Badger men’s basketball coach Greg Guard announced on Monday afternoon that Rhode Island will be replacing Louisville as Wisconsin’s opponent on Wednesday evening. That’s due to positive tests and contact tracing within the Cardinals program.
The Rams compete in the Atlantic-10 Conference and won the league’s regular-season title in back-to-back years in 2017 and ’18. They were the #3 seed in the 2020 A-10 tournament that was called off due to COVID-19 on March 12th, just as the rest of the major tournaments were being axed including the NCAAs.
The game between the Badgers and the Cardinals was to be part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. That game hasn’t been called off completely just yet, both schools are hoping to reschedule it at some point.
