MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Badgers will keep Paul Bunyan’s axe after a 20-17 overtime win over Minnesota.
The Badgers built a 7-point lead in the 4th quarter when back-up quarterback Chase Wolf threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jack Dunn. Wolf was in the game when starting quarterback Graham Mertz was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit earlier in the drive.
Minnesota would tie the game with 4:40 left in regulation on a 9-yard touchdown throw from Tanner Morgan to Mike Brown-Stephens.
Both teams would possess the ball once more late in the 4th quarter, but neither could score.
In overtime, Wisconsin elected to play defense first. Minnesota was stopped after one first-down and missed a 34-yard field goal. The Badgers moved the ball down to the 11-yard-line on their first possession of OT, and won the game on a 30-yard field goal by Collin Larsh.
Garrett Groshek, senior running back, led the Badgers with 154 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.
The Badgers improved to 3-3 for the season. Minnesota fell to 3-4. The Badgers hold a 62-60-8 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.
