RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Law enforcement officials in Rib Mountain are reporting incidents of mail theft in the Town of Rib Mountain.
Sheriff’s Deputy Cassandra Seubert says it appears the individual or group is looking for checks, cash, or gift cards that are being sent as gifts. If they don’t find anything worth taking, then they’ve been tearing the mail up and leaving it in the street a few blocks away.
Seubert says the items have been stolen out of mailboxes that have their flags up, indicating there are outgoing items in them.
She says the best way to guard against having your mail stolen is to use secure mailboxes or to send your items from the post office directly. If that’s not possible, she says to wait until close to your mail collection time before placing your items in the mailbox.
Tampering with mail is a federal offense.
