DEERBROOK, WI (WSAU) — Authorities are turning to the public for help after a Red-tailed hawk was illegally shot in the Northwoods.
The Langlade County Sheriff’s Department says they responded to a report of an injured hawk on Christmas Eve near County Road A and Kramer Road near Deerbrook. The deputy took the injured hawk to the Raptor Education Group, Inc. for treatment. The facility found that the hawk had been illegally shot.
The Red-tailed hawk is a federally-protected species. Shooting a federally-protected species can be considered a federal crime under the Endangered Species Act resulting in a $2,000 fine for a first violation.
