STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza says he’s glad to see another round of stimulus dollars coming into the local economies of Central Wisconsin.
Wiza says the $600 checks- many of which were direct deposited as of Monday morning- comes as a relief to some, and as an added bonus for others.
“It’s something, but really it’s more of a gesture than a solution,” said Wiza. But, he says for those that can, they should take some time to use a portion of the funds to be a “tourist in their own community
“Get caught up on bills, or pay in advance if you are anticipating being affected by COVID here in 2021, or tuck [a little bit] away. But really, it’s designed to be re-injected into the community. That’s where shopping local comes in. Treat yourself to a nice dinner, or go out and buy yourself a new jacket or with the snow we had last week maybe a new shovel or snowblower.”
Wiza says by spending the money at local merchants instead of going straight to Amazon or other online retailers you can your friends and neighbors keep their shops open.
“[Buying online] helps, but it takes money out of the community,” he added. “Try to keep it local if you can.”
