WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Despite what was a rough year for many businesses and individuals the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce says over $690,000 in Chamber Gift Certificates were sold in 2020.
“Those are dollars which are going to be kept local and spent at a variety of members across the region,” said the Chamber’s Marketing Director Brian Otten.
The chamber’s goal is always to sell close to $1 million worth of the certificates every year, which nearly happened in 2019 at over $900,000. Otten says to hit 70% of that goal in what was a less than normal year is a win.
“We were happy to arrive where we did. There were so many unknowns and we had to change the way we structured the sale and pickup of certificates, so we were very pleased to end at nearly $700,000.”
Otten adds that during the onset of the pandemic the Chamber discouraged the sale of their own gift certificates. Instead, calling on residents to purchase gift cards or certificates directly from their favorite local businesses as a way of giving them added cash flow while shutdown orders were in effect.
Chamber gift certificates are sold year-round but are most popular during the last two months of the year when many businesses purchase them as a year-end bonus or holiday gift for employees. Certificates can be purchased in denominations from $10-$50 directly from the chamber on Tuesday or Thursday mornings. Those purchasing the certificates are asked to order them ahead of time and arrange for pickup. For large orders, you’re asked to allow three business days for processing.
