WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — Wisconsin’s 7th District Congressman Tom Tiffany didn’t budge on his stance to challenge the electoral votes of several states Wednesday even after unrest broke out at the Capitol.
Tiffany and fellow Congressional newcomer Scott Fitzgerald both were among the 120 House Republicans who voted to overturn the ballots of several states over what they claimed were voting irregularities.
Senator Ron Johnson had previously committed to challenging ballots in his chamber as well, but like many others, he backed off from that after rioters broke into the Capitol. That led to some lawmakers being escorted out of the building while others ducked under tables for protection. Some also wore gas masks in case chemical weapons were deployed.
Both chambers reconvened just after 8 PM Eastern to pick up their discussions about an objection to Arizona’s vote total. Instead, many used their allotted discussion time to condemn the acts of the rioters and call for the session to focus on the act of counting the votes instead of questioning their legitimacy.
The Electoral College was ultimately approved.
