MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A three-goal outburst between the second and third period helped the top-ranked Golden Gopher men’s hockey team salvage a split with Wisconsin 5-3.
Minnesota’s Sammy Walker opened the scoring early in the first, but Wisconsin would battle back to take a 2-1 lead by the midway point of the second. Blake McLaughlin then sparked that three-goal run with seven minutes remaining in the second.
Wisconsin got goals from both Brock and Cole Caufield along with Sam Stange. Roman Ahcan and Jesper Peltonen both added two assists.
Robbie Beydoun stopped 19 shots to take the loss in net.
With the win, Minnesota goes back to eight points clear of Wisconsin for first place in the Big Ten Conference standings. The Golden Gophers have 27 points from ten conference games (9-1-0), while Wisconsin are in second with 19 points (6-4-0)
Wisconsin will host Arizona State for two non-league games next weekend. The Sun Devils have entered into a scheduling agreement with the Big Ten this year that allows them to play two games at the home arena of whichever league team is on a bye each week. Though they will not be considered league members for 2020-’21, and will not participate in the league tournament or be eligible for any All-Big Ten awards.
The Badgers return to B1G play January 21st and 22nd against Penn State.
