GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU-WRN) — Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Monday in no uncertain terms that Aaron Rodgers is his QB going forward.
“We’re not in this position without him,” said LaFleur. “I couldn’t be happier with not only his performance but how he led our football team. All the little things he does within that locker room to ensure that everyone is locked in, focused, ready to go. Absolutely, he will be here for a long time,” said LaFleur.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst doubled down on those comments, saying he doesn’t think he has to defend Rodgers to anyone. “I will say this: We’re really excited not only for next year but the years to come. He’s playing at such a high level that he always has, and I think this year was a special team.”
Following last Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship game some began to read into comments Rodgers made following the contest, in which he called into question his future with the team. Rodgers has brushed off that speculation, saying no one is guaranteed a roster spot from year to year in the NFL. There has also been speculation among insiders that Rodgers is not happy with his contract situation or the fact that the team traded picks in last year’s draft to select Utah State QB Jordan Love in the first round.
Love was the team’s 3rd-string QB for much of the season, meaning the team spent a first-round pick on a player who didn’t see the field at all during the 2020 regular season and January’s playoffs. In fact, with no preseason games due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Love did not take a competitive snap at all this season.
Rodgers is under contract through 2023 but has no guaranteed money left on his deal
On Monday CBS Sports also reported that the Los Angeles Rams approached the Packers about acquiring Rodgers, who went to college at the University of California-Berkeley, before pulling off a mega-deal with the Detroit Lions that has the two teams swapping starting QB’s and the Lions acquiring three draft picks (Two first-round, one third-round) from the Rams. The Packers reportedly outright refused to entertain the offer.
