WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — While a first dog park is in the works for Wausau, some are already thinking about the next potential park.
Monday afternoon Wausau’s Park and Recreation Committee discussed the idea of the City looking into creating a second dog park. The City’s first dog park is currently under construction with a likely opening date sometime this summer.
Committee Chair and District 1 Alder Pat Peckham brought the idea to the committee to get feedback on if there would be interest for a second dog park in the next two to three years.
Dog Park Special Committee member and District 4 Alder Tom Neal said the idea from the beginning was for the city to have multiple dog parks. “We had always said from the beginning that this was intended to be our first dog park, not necessarily our only one.”
During the discussion, present committee members recommended some features to look at for a second dog park. District 10 Alder Lou Larsson noted that as a big dog park guy he’d like to see a site with more space that can accommodate exercise for both dogs and their owners.
District 3 Alder Tom Killian suggested the City look at environmentally challenged sites for a new dog park to potentially get some outside funding for the future project.
“Personally I’d like to explore environmental and brownfield sites where we could tap into some remediation funds perhaps. So if that’s involved in the considerations set and site identification, that would be an interest to me.”
Currently, Wausau’s first dog park is set to open sometime this summer. The dog park will be located on 4th Street behind the Post Office in downtown Wausau with artificial turf and a walking path.
