MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU-WDLB) — City leaders in Marshfield have voted to move forward with proceedings that could end with the removal of Mayor Bob McManus from office.
WDLB Radio in Marshfield reports that the investigation stems from an open-records request relating to text messages that were allegedly sent by McManus from a city-issued cell phone.
According to McManus, an investigation into the matter was opened by the Portage County Sheriff’s office last fall. The results were turned over to the Wood County District Attorney before the end of 2020, and the matter was closed without any formal charges.
On Tuesday the city council voted 9-0 to instruct Council President Tom Witzel to serve McManus with a copy of the complaint against him. Further action by the council also instructed City Administrator Steve Barg to secure legal representation and open a public hearing on the matter.
The wording in one of the motions that were approved during Tuesday’s meeting indicates the complaint may have been lodged by Andy Keogh, who serves on the city’s Police and Fire Commission.
The date for that hearing has not been set but must be given with at least ten days’ notice.
Very few details, including the contents of the text messages in question, have been released.
