WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Many parents and students in the Wausau School District may get the news that they have been waiting to hear Monday evening.
During a special 5 PM Board of Education meeting at the East High School Auditorium board members will consider a motion to return to in-person classes four days per week beginning March 1st.
According to a presentation that will be given to the board Monday evening the district has seen a sharp spike in course failures and incompletes that officials are not blaming on either students or instructors. Instead, officials cite a “structure that does not support academic excellence.”
Students are currently going to class on alternating days in a Group A/B format to allow for better social distancing. Should the board vote to go to a four-day in-person school week, teachers estimate they could maintain some form of social distancing in just over 60% of classes.
Leaders will consider data that compares the Wausau School District to seven other similar districts including Mosinee where more than 90% of students are attending classes in-person and less than 1% of students were in quarantine as of mid-January.
Should the district move to four-day, in-person learning the proposal calls for social distancing to be maintained “to the extent possible” and consistent and correct mask usage at all times.
