WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The city of Wisconsin Rapids wants you to get involved in local government decisions.
Mayor Shane Blaser has worked with city staff to implement a new system to allow residents to apply for vacant committee and commission positions right from the city website.
“It’s always a struggle for Mayors to fill these positions,” said Blaser. “So, we’ve created an online presence where that can be done.”
Many of the positions don’t require experience in government, just a desire to help shape the decisions that will impact the community. Blaser adds that in some cases the time commitment is minimal as well. “I think about parks and recreation. It’s always nice to have people on the park and rec commission that have children that are using the parks. They bring some value to those activities.
“It could be an occasional meeting to one meeting per month. That’s all outlined out on the website,” added Blaser.
He says volunteering for one of the open seats could also lead to other opportunities to serve.
“Someone may sit on a board or commission and find out there’s a greater need to run for City Council or try to get involved in other ways. It’s a good opportunity.”
Residents who may be interested can find the application on the city’s website by clicking here. Anyone with questions can also contact City Hall directly at 715-421-8200.
Blaser himself was working in the private sector and serving as an Alderperson on the City Council before winning a two-year term as Mayor last year.
