MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Badger men’s basketball team dropped a key Big Ten contest to Illinois 74-69 on Saturday.
D’Mitrik Trice led all scorers with 29 points but didn’t get much help from his teammates. Micah Potter added 15 off the bench and Nate Reuvers scored 6. But no one else ended the game with more than five points.
Kofi Cockburn led the Fighting Illini with 19 points and seven rebounds. Andre Curbelo scored 17.
The Badgers shot just 35% in the game compared to 52% for Illinois. They also lost the three-point battle 56% to 32% but did shoot better at the free-throw line (73%-70%)
Wisconsin was out-rebounded 43-30.
Before the game, the Badgers did honor their seven seniors before a mostly empty arena. Each player was given the usual framed jersey and recognition over the PA system, while a small number of parents were allowed in the Kohl Center seated several rows away from the floor.
The Badgers have just two games remaining in the Big Ten regular season. They’ll visit Purdue in West Lafayette on Tuesday, then close out the campaign in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes next Saturday.
The Big Ten Tournament is scheduled to be played in Indianapolis beginning on March 10th. As it stands the Badgers would enter the tourney in the second round but could earn the coveted double-bye into the quarterfinals if they sweep Iowa and Purdue and get some help.
