GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU-WRN) — The Green Bay Packers have hired a long-time NFL defensive assistant to be their next D Coordinator.
Joe Barry, who’s spent time with a handful of clubs, says he’s excited to start building his defense.
“I come to work every day ready to go,” said Barry. “I can’t stand those guys where you never know, you’ll walk into the building and see them in the hall [and] you don’t know what kind of day it is going to be-is it going to be an up day or a down day? You know exactly what you are going to get from me every single day.”
It remains unknown what the off-season workout and training programs will look like, but Barry says that doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm about the off-season.
“I can’t wait to get these guys in here and teach them the system, our philosophy,” he said. Barry adds that he will put a special emphasis on pass rushers and defensive backs.
Barry has spent time with the Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Washington Football Team. Most recently, he was an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams.
During that career, which dates back to the early 2000s, he was part of the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl following the 2002 regular season. He was also on the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff the year they struggled to an 0-16 finish.
Most of his career has been spent as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.
During his media availability earlier this week he admitted that he’s already started trying out some Wisconsin traditions including ice fishing.
Barry and Head Coach Matt LaFleur did coach together for one year in LA. During the interview process, they spent more than 14 hours talking football, including included two different interviews that were conducted via Zoom and a handful of phone conversations.
